Mandailing Natal, March 9, 2026 – The shallot harvest carried out by a farmer group assisted by PT Sorik Marapi Geothermal Power (SMGP) in Sibanggor Jae Village, Puncak Sorik Marapi Subdistrict, Mandailing Natal Regency, marking SMGP’s efforts to strengthen the community's economy through empowerment programs in the agricultural sector.

Corporate Communications Manager of PT SMGP, Agung Iswara, stated: “PT SMGP continuously strives to support communities around its operational areas, one of which is through its economic empowerment programs. Sibanggor Jae Village has strong potential for shallot farming, and through this CDCR program we aim to encourage the development of that potential so it can provide sustainable economic benefits for the community.”

The shallot cultivation program was initiated by members of the Mutiara Tanah Farmer Group, who recognized the fertile soil potential in Sibanggor Jae Village for horticultural commodities with relatively stable economic value. The group began planting in November 2025 by optimizing land use through crop rotation, including planting shallots between coffee plants to make more effective use of available land.

This activity is part of PT SMGP’s community empowerment initiatives under its economic pillar, which encourages productive land utilization while increasing farmers’ income in surrounding areas.

Overall, the shallot harvest of the Mutiara Tanah Farmer Group for the planting period from November 2025 to March 2026 reached 3,054 kg, marking the growing development of this horticultural commodity as a source of economic strengthening for the village community.

The harvest carried out by the Mutiara Tanah Farmer Group demonstrates the increasing development of shallot cultivation in Sibanggor Jae Village as one of the alternative commodities for local farmers. In addition to improving land productivity, this activity is also expected to strengthen the independence of the farmer group through the use of part of the harvest as seeds for the next planting season.
